MKB – On Another Note

Aussie hiphop is growing in leaps and bounds, and it’s good to see that not only are the more traditional groups like Hilltop Hoods, Koolism, and 1200 Techniques getting exposure, but some of the more experimental groups that are around are also getting on the airways. One such group is MKB, who’s latest EP ‘On Another Note’ is funny, esoteric and entertaining without being wankerish.

The EP is full of funny bleepy noises, clever rhymes and a unique charm. Starting with Heatman, a song which has a senseless yet clever rhyme, much like a Dr Seuss book, with a bass heavy yet simple backing track with some twanging rubber scratching. I Try is similarly nonsensical, rhyming words and sentences that are as far apart as the Arctic and Antarctica. Monkey Business takes the typical hiphop braggadocio and twists it into a warped parody of itself.

Weathering Industry has a funky breakbeat that borders on dnb in its sensibility and talks, perhaps, about MKB’s entry into the music world, but it isn’t really clear. Whoops is jangly, happy nonsense where the singer discusses coming out of the closet, amongst other things. Positive Minds Attract reminds me somewhat of Ween, (which is a good thing!) with a melodic chorus, acoustic guitar and great breakbeat.

The last tune Summer With You is a little bit of a disappointment, being a bleepy experimental thing that sounds like it was made on an Amiga500, but I don’t find it very interesting. Luckily the EP contains a hidden tune, 4 Yams Short of a Jam, which again takes a bunch of rhyming words and spits them out seemingly at random, but with a particular sense of style, much like a Dali painting.

As the boys say on their website “As a listener we value your powers of explanation and creative deduction, so we don’t nark on you by ranting about the ‘deep and meaningfuls’ of our tracks”, so I won’t try to psychoanalyse them either, but sit back, relax and enjoy the seven track day trip into MKB land.
