Audio Bully’s – Ego War

Sounding absolutely crap on a computer system due to the copy control, which doesn’t read the CD audio tracks but reads poorly encoded mp3 type files hidden on the disc, I thought I wouldn’t be able to give this CD a decent review. I understand the fight against piracy and the distributors desire to protect its artists’ intellectual property, and all that, but it’s still damn annoying to hear tinny, empty sounds when listening to it on a computer, especially when the copy control can be easily bypassed.

That aside, this group is like a cross between the Streets and Terminal Head, with a bit of Madness and the Specials thrown in the mix. With nice phat beats over loads of samples from diverse performers such as Elvis Costello, Joe Cocker and 1970’s cop shows, showing that there’s more to this group than first meets the ear. I’m a lover of “laddish” music, from Happy Mondays to the aforementioned Madness, but can see how some people might not appreciate the irrelevance of the “cor blimey” vocals.

Stand out tunes include ‘We Don’t Care’, which is like a new anthem for today’s youth, resplendent in it’s glory of telling “them” to “fuck off”. The squelchy ‘Tyson’s Shuffle’ with its spooky theremin sounds and ghostly vocals recalls days of early techno exploration, while ‘I Go To Your House’ is has quite a funky disco beat. The last track, “Ego War” is a stomper, with tough beats and old-school ravey sounds splattered across 4 minutes of Street’s like rhymes.

You can’t listen to these guys without a smile on your face. It’s snappy and intelligent, although if you’re not into that British “Lad” mentality, then you definitely won’t like this. However, if you like a bit of irrelevance thrown into your mix of phat beats and basslines, check them out.
