Forefront – Mixed by EK

Australia loves breaks. Every internationally based breaks DJ I’ve interviewed tells me that we have the best breaks scene in the world. It’s one of the reasons they keep coming back… that, and the weather. But Australian breaks producers are only just making it to the forefront of the scene, and that’s what this release is all about.

Mixed by Melbourne’s EK, who has a very well respected reputation overseas, this CD features some of Australia’s finest breakbeat producers. Starting off funky with Sunday Swinger by Price Cuts and I like it by Brisbane duo Soma Rasa, the album progressively gets deeper and darker as it moves along. Whilst Friendly, Nu Breed, and Sonic Animation are names that are familiar to most Australian dance music lovers, the tracks here are typical of their sound. Friendly’s S&M has a happy yet dark vibe, Nubreed feature top notch production, and EK’s remix of Sonic Animation’s Get Up bring in the familiar rave sounds.

Tracks like Deep Underground by Elroy, Smithmonger’s Hey, and EK’s Born To Live add a darker edge to the album. Whilst none of the tunes venture too far from the nuschool breaks sound, with perhaps the exception of Bass Kleph’s Bonx, all the tunes are individual enough to hold your attention, and bold enough to get your head bobbing along.

EK’s mixing is smart and unobtrusive, building the vibe nicely and highlighting the quality of the Australian breakbeat elite. This is a great album to get someone who’s already into breakbeat who has all the big releases, but also works to introduce someone to the hottest sound in Australia at the moment.
